We've done numerous trips to the NT and travel only with mobile phones. We stick with Telstra because they cover more area than others. We've also travelled the Gibb including Kalumburu, visited the Kimberleys and Broome and north to Cape Leveque. All with a mobile and CB. In saying that we did not have health issues to consider. The distances vary between towns, camps and roadhouses but if you visit in the dry you will see and meet an abundance of grey nomads if in need of assistance. I guess it boils down to your specific health conditions as to whether you might feel more at ease between camps with a SAT phone.
Thank you Smed. We understand what you have said and we are looking at the necessity of a SAT Phone. We travel in pairs with CB and iPhone and we are with Telstra as well. My brother does have a heart problem which is under control but being in the middle of nowhere is of concern for me (the bride) not so much the men.
hi Jill & Larry
we have had a sat phone since our trip to Broken hill , we found out that some towns you only have coverage for a few klm from town so we brought one for peace of mind from campersat for around $500.after rebate they are not cheap to buy or use but you can call 000 for free check Telstra map coverage and see if where your going has coverage
