I have had one for a couple years now and have only been in a situation once when I really needed it. The only reason I've kept it is so I can stay in touch with family when I'm camped for a while where you can't get normal reception. Just gives you that peace of mind to know that everything's okay back home. I'm off on another trip very shortly where I will be camped on an island in the territory but after that I will get rid of it. In the end, the cost of having one just isn't worth it for the amount of times you use it.
In your situation I'd be inclined to look at renting one for your trip.
If you did decide to buy one, the Iridium would be the better one to look at.

G'day Gordy,

Which island in the territory do you camp on?

In a while, crocodile

I can use my Telstra sim (it's the larger sim card and must be set on global roaming) in our sat phone. Initially had it on $35/mth plan which ran out after 2 yrs - then I tried the Telstra sim after hearing about it on the forum.
Will be selling our sat phone if anyone is interested as our big travel days to isolated places is over. Only used it once but gave us good peace of mind.
