We are on the Eyre Peninsula at the moment and have been shocked how they have shut down so many free camps and put a $10 per day fee on them.
Does anyone still come down hear any more?
I have a survey that I was given at Streaky Bay about how they can improve their tourism and they appear to be chasing the Grey Nomads away and focusing on mum, dad and the kids only.
I would appreciate any comments so I can include them in the survey.
Phil

That's interesting Phil. We have not been in SA for 2 years now, our last visit being the Simpson and Great Victoria Deserts but not the coastline. When we were in Streaky Bay last we free camped about 20kms from town overlooking the ocean where we had to be totally self sufficient. Yet we did frequent the town and spend our money there. The replica of the great white shark in the tourist centre plus the photos of great whites in the pub were intriguing. It almost put me off swimming.
We also camped at Cactus Beach which was beautiful too, with shingleback lizards and birdlife frequenting our camp. Again, it has been a while so I am not sure what has changed.
For a $10 fee are they providing any utilities? Showers, toilets, drinking water etc?
Cheers,
Sharon

No Sharon, there was no toilet, no shower and no water. Not even a rubbish bin. It was on an old cricket ground but no grass.
We only found one location that was free and it was well occupied. the rest were between $5 and $10 a night with 48 and 72 hours limit.
The trip was also spoiled by the constant gale force winds so we went inland and spent some time on the Murray and up to Dereton NSW to a Veterans camp
