g'day Smed,
I wouldn't worry about taking wood. We had the milk crate full too but didn't use it.
There's plenty of wood out there .
Take extra fuel of course and plenty of water. And I agree with you about the tucker. Pretty important stuff.
Cheers, Brian.
Last night as I was on the stair
I saw a man that wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish he'd bloody go away.

Good to know about the firewood Sands, less weight and more room for other stuff. Now we are all considering extending our Simpson adventure into the Victoria Desert as well. In the 80's I came through with the troopcarrier towing a Jayco camper along the Old Gunbarrell. Once at Mt Dare we will probably head NW to Finke, across to Kulgera, hit the Mulga Park rd which I believe is the Old Gunbarrell hwy to Surveyor Generals Corner. Then make the SE climb down to Anne Beadell hwy, E to Coober Pedy, hit the Oodnadatta then back to the black top.
What do you reckon?

i came across a press that you can press wet newspaper into bricks so if wood isnt available we can press some paper up and each brick burns for quite a while so i have filled a plastic box with bricks for when we travel

Update! Tomorrow is departure day. Here on the Central Coast we are getting light showers so packing the ute might be a tad fun but we are determined to set off early tomorrow morning regardless. Our friends, soon to be mini convoy, await us at Coolabah just south of Bourke as they left over the weekend. We have taken your advice on board and will not take the generator or firewood yet will carry extra jerry cans of fuel and water. I have cooked a few brews and cryovacced them down for dinners. They are meals that simply need a reheat and could go with either bread, spuds or pasta. Also have the foil packed for spuds on the fire. Almost overnight the temperature has dropped considerably too but already equipped with jackets, etc. Will keep you all posted.
